Every parent knows that picking a baby name is a big thing. Do you go with a family name? A traditional name? An original name? Do you want your kid’s name to stand out?
If you’re still not sure, you can always go with one of the favorites. According to the Social Security Administration, here are the most popular boy and girl baby names for 2012, in order of popularity.
Ever wondered how your choices compare to those of your great-great-grandparents? Well, the SSA also has a page listing the top 10 baby names (five male, five female) by year for the past 100 years. Interestingly, girl’s names tend to change with fashion, but the choices for boys remain fairly constant. For example, in 1963, the top five girl names were Lisa, Mary, Susan, Karen, and Linda; in 1913 they were Mary, Helen, Dorothy, Margaret, and Ruth. By comparison, the top five boys’ names in 1963 were Michael, John, David, James and Robert, and in 1913 they were John, William, James, Robert, and Joseph.
