Alison is Scottish and Old German in origin. As a variation of the name Alice, Alison is generally understood to mean "noble" or "exalted." The name was commonly used in France and England during the Middle Ages and underwent a revival during the twentieth century. Alison is still frequently used in the United States, although the preferred spelling of the name is Allison.
