Competitive 4 year old
Whoa, our 4 year old is the most competitive little guy ever. Is this normal? In all seriousness, he HAS to win at everything from Candyland to running up the stairs first. He has a true freak out with tears and all if he doesn’t “win”. We don’t make anything a competition, and we always talk about how it’s “okay to not win” and to “be happy for the other person”. Any other experiences out there similar to ours?

Do Milestones Really Matter?
Admit it – as a parent you wonder from time to time if your baby is meeting all of his or her developmental milestones. But do milestones even matter or are they just another needless thing to worry about as a new parent? Join me to discuss the ins and outs of developmental milestones and what they really mean for your child.
Great topic! What are your thoughts on allowing babies to come to their milestones on their own? Th… -
Daughter crying at preschool – when is it a concern?
We recently started our 3 year old in a 2 morning a week preschool program, and she’s crying for an hour a day around snack time. Our first daughter never had trouble adjusting, when is this a concern?
I agree the teachers are your best guide! If they aren’t worried, you probably shouldn’… -
Ebola, kids exposed…do we need to be worried?
I am trying not to read too much because I know how incessant media coverage can over blow a story…but what do we really need to know here? http://www.wfaa.com/story/news/health/2014/10/01/thompson-dallas-county-ebola-patient-cases/16524303/

Finally found a Frozen Elsa costume!
As many of you probably know, the Disney Store has been sold out of Elsa costume dresses for months and the one sold at Toys ‘R Us is not well-rated, with many parents sharing that their daughters couldn’t wear it because it was so itchy and cheaply made. I thought about having one made on Etsy, but each one I found had turnaround times too long for my needs or was very expensive. Now, Party City has Elsa and Anna costumes: http://www.partycity.com/category/halloween+costumes/shop+by+brand/frozen.do. I ordered an Elsa one and it just came in. It fits well, seems to be well-made and the sleeve material doesn’t seem itchy. Just thought I’d share in case any of you have been trying to get one for your little ones.
Yes, but if the craze lasts as long as the Little Mermaid did when I was a little girl, it could be… -
Spring Break Travel Tip!
I was chatting with Matt Villano of wanderingpod.com this week about travel with young children. Matt is hilarious and smart and gave me this great tip about those ridiculously loud automatic flushing toilets that young children (everyone) hate. Post It notes! Cover the sensor with Post It notes and you won’t have to stress your child out with the threat of a flush. Brilliant! Thanks, Matt!
That was great! It is really something sanitary and clean to do that. -
How Do You Handle Quitting?
My 5 year old has quit everything. Ballet, bike riding, and now she’s trying to quit ice skating and swim lessons. Do you let them stop? Or do require them to see activity through? My husband thinks I’m pushing too hard…but we can’t let them give up if they can’t do it on the first try! I blogged about it…would love to hear others opinions. http://bit.ly/1dJ3Fdr
That’s a great point, that kids this age live in the here and now. But I do agree they need … -
Trick to Get Your Child to Talk About School
For the longest time, I would ask my daughter questions about her day and get nothing. Then I got more specific with my questions (who did you sit next to at lunch? what lesson was your favorite today?) and got a little more chatter. A friend told me about a family dinner tradition to get her kids to share more about their days, and it’s been working like a charm! Each night at dinner, we go around the table and share our “Peak” and our “Pit” (the high point of the day and the low point). Not only am I learning SO much more about my daughter’s activities and social interactions at preschool, but I’m actually hearing more from my husband about his job!
You’re welcome! Hope it works like a charm for you, too. 🙂 -
Shots When They Are Old Enough To Know It's Coming
Shots were no big deal until my daughter was old enough to know what was up. She has a check up next week and will need vaccinations… I’m wondering how I can make it as easy for her as possible. Any tips on making them less painful, and preparing her beforehand?
I never tell her beforehand. It’s awful when she knows…she gets too anxious! -
Christmas Gifts for Teachers

How do you feel about NYC's new mandatory flu shots for preschoolers policy?
Did you read that NYC will now require flu vaccination for all children attending city-licensed preschools and daycare centers? While the Centers for Diseases Control (CDC) now recommends universal flu vaccination for all kids over the age of six months, New York is just one of a few places that require it for school. We’d love to here your thoughts on this new policy!
Love this! We need to do our part as parents and vaccinate our kids. This will help prevent them f… -
Do you let your child dress herself?
I’m creative. My daughter is creative. I encourage creativity in many ways- one of which is letting my daughter dress herself. I should also mention that I’m into fashion… so when she looks crazy, it’s irksome and sometimes downright embarrassing. Sometimes I wonder what people think- her teacher, for example. Please tell me they know she is choosing her own clothes!

School Projects
My daughter has a vocabulary parade this week, where she had to make a costume based on a compound word (pretty ambitious for preschool but it’s part of a big school!). We chose “cupcake” so I made her a slice of cake out of foam board and felt (pink with sprinkles at her request) and she is wearing a headband with a teacup on her head. Cup-cake. It was fun to make (after a long day of work, dinner, night routine…) but only because I love getting crafty. I wondered if most parents dread these big projects? This is only the beginning for me.
I’m not a preschooler mom but a big part of me does not look forward to crafty things mainly …
