7 month old wakes up every 2 hours at night

I’ve had a difficult baby from about 5 weeks old, but we had finally gotten a good rhythm at bedtime and he would sleep for 5 hours, eat, and then sleep again for 3 hours. That started at about 4 months old and was going really great. Now, for the last 3 weeks, he will wake up every 2 hours. Whenever I go in to check on him, he’s either sitting up and screaming or standing in his crib screaming.
I’ve tried to lay him back down and let him go back to sleep, but he usually screams even harder. I’ve tried letting him cry and just peeking in the room to make sure he’s OK (without actually letting him see me) and he will cry for 5-10 minutes and then go back to sleep. But 2 hours later, he’s back awake and doing it all over again.
I don’t know if letting him cry is good for him… I hate that I have to do it, but I’m exhausted and frustrated and don’t know what to do with him. Usually I let him cry the first time he wakes up. Then the second time I’ll feed him and he’ll usually drink 4-6 Oz of expressed BM.
I don’t think hes teething… I don’t see or feel any changes in his gums. We started solids about 3 weeks ago. He usually gets cereal and fruit in the morning and then vegetables and fruits in the evening (always topped off with BM).
I just don’t know what else to do. I’m hoping it’s a stage, but 3 weeks seems like a long time?

  1. Is he hitting a developmental milestone? (Crawling, for example?) I found with my daughter that anytime she was progressing developmentally, she had major sleep interruptions. Another thought- have you tried looking at the solids to eliminate them one by one to see if that helps, in case his tummy isn’t reacting well to something new?

    1. He’s been crawling for 4 weeks now. He’s been pulling himself up for 2 weeks… And ‘talking’ a little more and using more sounds, so maybe that’s it? We’ve been doing one new solid each week (I eliminated dairy when he was 3 months old because his pediatrician thought he had a protein allergy). I’ve reintroduced dairy since he was 6 months and he’s done fine.
I don’t know if I’m just hypersensitive to him or what, but I try not to pick him up every time he cries… But sleeping for 1-1/2 to 2 hours at a time is taking its toll and I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. 🙁
Thank you for the suggestion! I’ll keep watching to see if I’m missing something else.

  2. Sounds like a very difficult stage he is going through, but I promise you, this too shall pass. Be sure that he is going to bed early – between 6pm and 8pm is good for this age. Believe it or not, babies who are overtired can have a very hard time sleeping through the night. Also try to have predictable nap times each day, both in the morning and once or twice in the afternoon. Sounds like you are doing the right thing by letting him go back to sleep on his own without him seeing you. Babies are very smart, so if you respond to them one night with lots of attention, they will try the same thing night after night hoping to get the same result. Of course, you should make sure he is not wet, cold, hungry, etc, but after that it is ok to leave him to soothe himself back to sleep!
