At What Age Should Picky Eating STOP?

Our (almost) 7 year old is an extremely picky eater. His brother used to be picky as well, but he has sort of grown out of it and has become more adventurous over the years. But not this kid… his diet consists of bread, peanut butter, strawberries, chicken nuggets, milk and apple juice – and THAT IS IT!
Please tell me that he won’t be 37 years old, living in our basement and insisting on eating the Mickey Mouse-shaped chicken nuggets from Costco… (and playing Minecraft!)… PLEASE tell me that won’t happen!

  1. Tove, Based on the research, most children will grow out of being a picky eater by age 6, however, there are always outliers. Your son may be an extremely picky eater based on the number of foods he is eating (less than 20) and other factors, but this is best evaluated by a professional in feeding and nutrition. Kids with extremely picky eating or ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) need more help than the pat advice that is typical of picky eating to overcome it and expand their palate and diet. Have you had your son evaluated?

    1. Thank you Jill. We did have him evaluated years ago (when he was 3 years old). This is our medically complex son. He is immune compromised, has cardiomyopathy and hypotonia and hyper mobility – so I have always wondered if there was a physical reason why he’s so picky – if it’s hard for him to eat/ digest foods. Thank you for sharing this information. I will discuss it further with his pediatrician to see what he thinks.
