Baby not latching on.

Anyone else with problems of baby not latching on? My sons are 4 & 6 years old now, but as babies they would only latch on for a couple minutes and I’d had to pump and feed them with a bottle the rest of the time. I pumped for almost 8 months with both of them. The nurses tried to help, I even bought nipple shields with no luck at all. I am due again in 18 days so I am wondering if I’m about to encounter the same problem. Bought a new breast pump just in case.

  1. I often deal with moms who have the same problem and I know how frustrating it can be if you really want to breastfeed and are having a hard time. Sometimes your breasts can get so engorged when your milk comes in that it makes it almost impossible for the baby to latch on. Other times you may just need to keep experimenting with different positions until you find one that you and your baby are both comfortable with. I would really recommend meeting with a lactation consultant one on one in the hospital as soon as your baby is born so she can help you and your baby right away. It’s important to establish a good latch so the lactation consultant can help with the proper technique. The lactation consultant that helped me when I had my boys even met with me several times in the first couple of weeks just to make sure that things were going well. Just remember that every baby is unique so don’t lose hope!

  2. Sometimes baby’s trouble latching on can be due to tongue tie or low muscle tone as well. Hopefully you won’t have any problems with your newborn this time around. But if you do, in addition to a lactation consultant you could check with a speech-language pathologist specializing in infant feeding issues. The therapist can watch a feeding with you and your baby to look for any issues like low muscle tone and try techniques to help promote a better latch. I had to pump and bottle feed for 4 months with my daughter, so I understand how stressful it can be. Best of luck to you!
