Being Your Child’s Best Advocate & Not Backing Down

Jessica, your group description brought up old memories from when my daughter was a baby. I had an awesome pediatrician, but it took him forever to diagnose my daughter with silent reflux… Looking back, I realize that as a new mom I wasn’t great at sticking to my guns and listening to my own instincts. I wasn’t confident, and because I wasn’t confident, I didn’t speak up. I didn’t put my foot down and say, “Hey- I’m with her 24/7 and I know something isn’t right.” In addition to Dr. Sara’s advice on getting another doctor, I would advise you to never be afraid to speak loud and proud when it comes to your child’s health. It’s easy to be whisked in and out of an appointment and honestly, some doctors are a tad condescending which can make you feel intimidated. Take over-protective any day over bullied into silence… Whether it’s reflux or constipation or new mom parenting questions, you have a right to care about what’s best for your baby.

  1. I defiantly agree. A prime example, today I called to let then know after five days I’m still having to stimulate her for her to pass a stool. Well they asked for her name and once I gave it to them she immediately said “oh what now?” I’m sorry but I will call as much as it takes to help my daughter, and if they don’t like it I’ll find another doctor.

    2. Wow I’d be pretty mad if someone had said “oh what now” to me. We have been lucky and had very helpful Dr’s and their staff. I think keeping a record of things helps me. That way I have dates and events to spot patterns and help me speak up when I feel like something is wrong.

  2. I’m not a new mom anymore but I still have plenty of questions and expect respectful answers so if you aren’t happy with how your being treated either leave a complaint, get a new Dr, or use a hotline bc they’re there 24/7. I personally use a hotline and get a new person everytime so u don’t have to hear a what now…if u choose to use a hotline check on Google bc there’s hotlines for everything.
