Dads: did you get up with your baby at night?

Interesting article from a dad who was involved with his baby’s care at night, and how his own mother reacted to his involvement (it will surprise you!):

What did you do? What do you think?
I know if my husband hadn’t helped out, being successful at nursing would have been way more difficult. Also with me working full-time, I am not sure how I would have survived!

  1. I got up with my baby at night, but not nearly as much as my wife. Especially when she was breast feeding. This guys mom was brought up when the men were less involved with the home than they are today, so that may be why she thinks it’s more of the mothers role to get up with the baby. No doubt, however, that there is a stronger bond between mom and baby at that point in baby’s life. Our daughter also never slept for more than a couple of hours, so like the writer, it took both of us to tag team the night away!

  2. My wife, her 30 Something female friend and I had this discussion the other day.

My wife is expecting us to “Tag team” in the early days. Which seems fine. I may fell different when I return to work.

But, her friend has an interesting outlook on it. She feels that my wife should take care of the night-time duty and allow me to sleep. This is based on the understanding and expectation that I will be the one handling all of the day time care (as well as household duties). This actually seems reasonable to me, but, I was interested to hear this from a woman.

We will see how things play out.

    1. Who is returning to work outside the home- you and/or your wife?

    2. Yes I must know too – are you handling all the daytime duties because you are staying home?

I think a plan is a good idea but until you get there, you won’t know what works for you guys. Just make sure EVERYONE gets some “me” time!!

  3. I honestly think it’s funny now how people have a “plan” on how they will parent their children or provide care. We thought we could do that as well, but daughter and life had other plans! If I can offer anything it’s just to roll with the punches and be flexible.
