Daughter crying at preschool – when is it a concern?

We recently started our 3 year old in a 2 morning a week preschool program, and she’s crying for an hour a day around snack time. Our first daughter never had trouble adjusting, when is this a concern?

  1. I am no expert but I would assume that is entirely normal, especially if she just started. Kids have different personalities – some saunter in and own the place on the first day, while others take a few weeks to adjust. If snack time is midday, it may be that she is just tired and getting used to the activity of a new routine – which can be exhausting! I’d just ask for feedback from teachers to ensure she is happy at other times and watch her progress. I bet she will adjust in no time!

  2. I agree that she will eventually get used to it. It might take a while simply because she is going just 2 mornings a week. Hang in there though, it will get better. 🙂

  3. Hi Kristen,
I agree with Dr Jen and Shelley, many children need time to adjust. It may help to adjust her snack and or nap time at home, as being in school takes a lot out of our little ones. In time she will acclimate to her new routine. Be consistent and patient through the process. Children thrive on consistency and any disruption in the routine can throw them off for a while. Even a simple time change for Day Light Savings time can take weeks to adjust to. The preschool will likely tell you when there is a concern. This is something they are likely very used to and typically they can offer some advise in helping your daughter adjust to their environment and routines.

    1. I agree the teachers are your best guide! If they aren’t worried, you probably shouldn’t be. Watch out for when she finally settles in and then the honeymoon/novelty wears off – sometimes they do great for a few weeks and then fall apart again once it is no longer new. It will probably take her longer to get comfortable since it is only the 2 days/week, but she will get there!
