Healthy Eating Habits

I only have an infant so I don’t have any real world experience with this, but my goal is to start healthy eating habits from the beginning. I’m sure it’s one of those “easier said than done!” kind of things, but I’d like to know how other parents promote health eating. I want to lead by example, but I also want her to be open to trying new things!

  1. I love this discussion. I think healthy eating starts with modeling good eating habits AND a good self image. Our kids are so sensitive to what we do and say to ourselves and we need to really think about the message we want to put out there. It’s not easy but we need to be better about our own food issues if we want to raise children with healthy relationships to food.

  2. We talk about healthy eating a lot (tip for when your baby gets a bit older). Why is it important to eat healthy? Because our bodies need fuel to run fast, do ballet well, you get the drift. It’s never about weight, but always about health. We don’t buy a lot of processed foods, talk about healthy choices while shopping together at the store. However, my husband and I were just talking about how hot dogs and macaroni & cheese slipped into our lives. How and when did that happen!? When did we start making it more frequently? Ugh. As hard as we try, sometimes these bad habits just creep in… But if you have a good base for conversation, you can tell your child why you’re cutting some things out if you get off track, which is what I have to do this week!

  3. Honestly, my son has made us healthier eaters. I was a fried anything, mac & cheese, pizza eating kind of gal. Now we still eat those things sometimes, but we always have at least one fruit or vegetable at every meal. We started to change our eating habits while I was pregnant, and we have kept it up in order to give our son a healthy start. He has made us better people in so many ways, including our overall health!
