how did you know you were in labor?

Alright moms, everyone loves a good birth story – but what I want to know is: how did you know you were in labor? Or were you not sure? Did it follow the guidelines your doc/midwife told you, or did you almost deliver at home not knowing things were moving along?? Share here and let’s hear your stories!
We’ve also got this post on signs of labor – did these sound like what happened with you?

  1. I had four scheduled c-sections… But my water broke with my third pregnancy. He was a big baby (11lbs 5oz) – so I guess he ran out of room. My husband told me to “lay down and put your feet up!”… I told him “uhhhhh NO! The doctor said to go in…” – my husband was just trying to get some more sleep!

    1. Fist pump to you for surviving an 11 lb baby and a sleepy husband, not to mention 4 c-sections!

  2. Both times I knew immediately when I was in labor (I envy people who don’t!). But both times I cut it close in getting to the hospital. I wanted a hospital birth but wanted to stay comfortable at home for as long as possible. IF I have another baby I won’t live on the edge… it sure would stink to roll the dice and have a baby in the car. 😉

    1. I’m sure you saw that video of the woman giving birth in the car? It cracked me up that the husband just kept right on driving!

      1. I LOVE that video! I cry every time I watch it. I love how she asks what she’s supposed to do, and the husband says, “love him.” So sweet.

  3. With my oldest, I started having contractions that felt like cramps. I was leaking a little, but didn’t realize that my water had broken until my sister suggested it. Sure enough, when I went for a checkup, my doctor confirmed that it had broken, but the baby’s head was so low that it had blocked the flow.
With my second, I was crampy again like the first time and then I had a big gush of water all over my bedroom carpet (gross!). That was the worst because it kept coming in spurts and when we got to the hospital I had to check in before going to the delivery floor. My pants were soaked by then and it was dripping onto the floor (I had a pad on, but obviously it wasn’t enough!).
For my third, I had a c-section before I went into labor. That was the easiest, but it felt like cheating!

    1. Ha! I like how you call it cheating, only moms who’ve been through labor call a major surgery that, right??

  4. I love birth stories! I was induced with my 2nd due to complications with HELLP syndrome, but my 1st was not at all what I expected. I was prepared for contractions timed so many per hour lasting so long, etc. etc. But when I went to bed one night, I felt a little gush that didn’t stop, so I jumped out of bed and let it go (let it go!!! now I’m singing in my head…) all over the bedroom floor. I then woke my husband up. He freaked out and said we needed to get to hospital NOW, but I wasn’t even cramping yet. So I called my doctor’s office and spoke with the on-call doctor. Of course, I went in then. I just had no idea what to do if my water broke before labor started! Now I know. 😉

    1. So sorry you had to deal with HELLP, that is so not fun. I am glad things went more smoothly the second time around.

  5. I love these! Ok, my turn. First baby I was in denial. Drove to the OB’s office for a weekly check-in, while contracting like crazy. My husband timed them at 4 minutes and thought I was nuts to bypass the hospital. Checked in to the office then waited a while because I was still convinced (aka in denial) that these were just mild cramping. Nevertheless, the midwife laughed out loud when she did my exam and then asked, “there’s a student with me today and she’s never seen active labor, mind if she looks.” Ha! Serves me right, I guess!

  6. My 1st I wasn’t sure til they told me at the hospital, my 2nd I started feeling contractions get closer and closer, and my 3rd I was making myself get contractions cuz i was a day away so i googled how to make it go sooner. Basically, if you’ve lost your mucus plug and later start feeling contractions get close then go in. It couldn’t hurt anyways the worse they could do is send you back home.

  7. Thought I posted mine but guess I didn’t! First pregnancy was super straight forward: painful contractions every 3 minutes, and 12 hours later I delivered! My second was a different story – contractions that came and went, pressure that came and went for days. Super fun. Finally I went in and was already 5cm dilated. Two hours later I had a baby. Go figure!!
