How do you handle dry skin?

My baby seems to have extra dry skin, and although I apply Johnson & Johnson baby lotion every night after a bath, I feel I could do more to help. Is there a lotion someone recommends? Also, here head seems to be dry and gets flaky sometimes. Is this just normal dry skin? Thanks!

  1. We’ve had good luck with cocoa butter in the winter when our son’s skin is drier. I’ve also had pretty good luck with coconut oil- but you should apply the coconut oil when their skin is still slightly wet to seal in the moisture. We also started doing lotion in the morning and at night and that has worked well during dry times. 🙂

  2. My girls are very fair and have extremely sensitive skin. I use ALL fragrance free products. I use Original Sprouts Hair & Body Babywash then cover them in CeraVe lotion (the one that comes in the tub, not the pump). It’s thicker and provides plenty of moisture. CeraVe also sells a body wash that my friend uses on her little girl and she swears by it. Good luck!

      1. Thanks so much!! I will check in to these. That might be what I need, a change of body wash AND lotion.

  3. I recommend Aquaphor ointment for so many different kinds of skin problems. It’s fragrance free and goes on very smooth, but not too greasy. Eucerin lotion or cream also works well, especially for babies with eczema. Make sure you apply it consistently twice a day for the best results. After bath, just pat your baby dry, leaving the skin a little damp, and then apply the lotion so it locks in the moisture. The fragrance in Johnson and Johnson may be irritating your little one’s skin, making things even worse!

    2. Great advice! Thanks Doc. I’ll check those out as well! And I didn’t know to leave the skin a little damp, I’ll try that. Although her hair is usually wet. I might need to leave it. Thanks!
