Is more TV over winter break bad?

I would love to hear both moms and dads weigh in on this one. http://m.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2013/12/i-refuse-to-feel-bad-about-letting-my-children-watch-tv/282547/
Is more TV when school is out the way to well rounded kids? Should we ditch the screen time guilt over the break?

  1. Yes, if by “well rounded,” you mean fat. Now, if some off school days are less filled than others, there may be a little more time spent in front of the tv. This does not mean it’s right. What should you do when the kids are off from school for winter break? Be a better parent! Plan fun activities, and spend some quality time with them. Play with all their new toys and games. Go to the park (or go sledding for you northerners). Of course I’m guilty of letting my child watch a little more television on lazy days, but I still feel guilty every time I press play…

  2. Hmmm… I think of it like this: What do I want to do when I have time off from work? Fun activities mixed with relaxation. What helps me relax? A good book or a good movie. My preschooler has so many days jam packed with school and extracurricular activities during the week. When she is off for Christmas break, I think it’s fair to give her what I give myself- fun activities we don’t normally have time for, extra time to just chill, and no stress about whether a few extra treats and shows will delay her language, increase obesity, etc. That’s what the rest of the year is for!

  3. Hmmm….I think like most things, it is about balance! Being in the midst of sub-zero temps and being stuck inside, I try to keep the guilt at bay if I put Sesame Street on in the morning to buy us an hour. However, when my son has watched more TV one day, I try to limit it in the days to follow to balance it out. I notice that on days where the TV is on more, he doesn’t sleep as well and is a little crabbier, so it is a reminder that toddlers weren’t meant to be parked in front of a TV, vacation or not! But a little bit to get you through a sick day or yet another snow-related school cancellation never hurt anyone…
