Male doulas: Yay or nay?

Male doulas: Yay or nay?

Interesting article about men becoming doulas and the feedback they have gotten. On the one hand, you might say how can a man know how to support a woman in labor? But isn’t that what we expect of partners? And isn’t that reverse discrimination? It really gets your brain going!

(and as a side note, I worked with a male midwife who was great!)

  1. Interesting, indeed. I assume that some women would feel the same about male doulas that they feel about male OB/GYNs- that they either can’t empathize because they aren’t women or that they just aren’t comfortable dealing with these issues around men. However, I could care less. I’ve had awful female OB/GYNs and great male ones. My husband was such a great birth coach that I can’t imagine saying a male wouldn’t be good as a doula. I think it just depends on your comfort and trust level with the individual.
