Mirena

Anyone out there have the Mirena? Do you or did you have side effects? I had it in for about 8 months and I just got it taken out (my husband had a vasectomy). I am glad it’s out because I have heard some not so good things! I do believe I gained weight on it even though apparently that is not a side effect…

  1. The Mirena is my favorite form of birth control when it comes to discussing with women a reliable (>99% effective) form of contraception that also lightens up your periods, is good for 5 years, and is completely reversible. Unfortunately the IUD has had a bad rap in the U.S. for previous generations having some side effects, but this and the copper IUD are wonderful when used in the right person. Weight gain can happen for many reasons, but so little progesterone does get into the blood stream that to be able to link it to the IUD is difficult.

Keep in mind – most people who are happy with their birth control tend not to profess it over the internet, so often there is a selection bias when it comes to what you look up and google!

    1. I’m still on the lookout for a good birth control, and my mom basically scared me away from IUDs. I’ve decided not to go with birth control pills anymore so between that and mom-scare over IUDs, there aren’t many options 🙁

Alexe, how did you like it?

  2. Holly, there were some side effects, as it would be amazing to find something with none, but I don’t think they’re out there! Bloating, cramps and I swear weight gain. But, my periods were shorter and lighter. I wonder if my period would’ve gone away completely if I’d kept it in longer?
