Naps

My 20 month old takes the shortest nap!! He only naps once a day in the afternoon. Anywhere from 40 minutes- an hour and a half (if I’m lucky). He seems so tired in the morning, but if I try and put him down he’ll scream the whole time. Plus, a morning nap really can’t fit into our schedule b/c I have a 4 year old with activities in the mornings. I feel like he’s a cranky baby b/c he’s not getting enough sleep. Any suggestions to get him to nap longer? Or am I just stuck with a short napper? He goes to sleep between 6:30-7:30 and wakes up around 6:30. Thank you!

  1. I’m actually really impressed! Most 20 month olds are down to one nap a day so I’m not surprised that he refuses the AM nap. I’d keep that bedtime as early as possible to make sure he gets 12 hours at night then keep on doing what you are doing. Maybe you can shift the afternoon nap just a wee bit earlier?

  2. I guess I thought he needed more than one nap since he wasn’t sleeping very much in the afternoon! I would move the nap earlier, but picking brother up at noon and then lunch makes naps around 1. Oh well! Thank you!

  3. I’d be happy if our child took one nap. I think she stopped napping around 18-20 months! The schools in Florida require all children under four to take a nap, and I think her teachers finally accepted that “being quiet” was the best they could expect from her.
