I also do part time work from home. I spend a few evenings a week working on the couch, right next to my husband. While it isn’t ideal it works out well while he’s watching football – which I wouldn’t watch anyway. I also “baby swap” with a friend once a week. She takes my little ones for 3 hours and then I go to Starbucks to work. The next day I take her baby for three hours – so I don’t have to spend money on childcare – and our kids get to socialize a bit. Those hours are super productive for me.
The story of my life! 🙂 I was a part-timer and recently went full-time from home, keeping my 9mo at home and sending my 3yo to school 3 days/week. I had to make myself set “working hours” during the day. I’m also trying very hard to eliminate my evening hours and work that time back into my days. Some days I fail on that front, but so far, it’s nice to keep more “regular” hours when possible. I think everyone (kids included) functions best on a routine (and even a schedule if you can swing it), so I would definitely recommended setting up some working guidelines for yourself. And if you’re keeping your kids at home, set up projects, activities, or games for them to do while you work. When my 3yo is home, he “works” when I work (he colors, does lessons on his learning tablet, does some sort of art project or play that doesn’t require 100% supervision from me). He enjoys “working with Mommy.” 🙂
