Newborn won’t nap during day

My 3 week old baby rarely sleeps during the day. He has trouble getting to sleep a and staying asleep. If he does nap during the day, it typically takes 30 minutes to put him to sleep and then he only lasts 5-20 minutes before he’s awake again. We usually do this on repeat until it’s time to nurse again. This also makes it difficult to know when he’s hungry.

  1. Hi Katherine! Three week olds really haven’t fallen into a sleep pattern yet. So focus more on the interval between feeds and less on when and how long he sleeps. You don’t really need to “put him to sleep” just let him doze when he’s ready, placing him in a safe sleep space like a crib. Sometimes, a swaddle can help because babies will startle when asleep which wakes them up. The swaddle keeps them snuggled a bit more. Soon he will fall into a more predictable routine and the naps will lengthen. For now, enjoy cuddling him whether awake or sleep!

    1. Thank you for the sanity check! I found so little info on newborn sleep except the total sleep guidelines. I guess I assumed that every non-feeding moment he should be asleep. Will continue with the snuggles.
