Prenatal Vitamins

Any suggestions for prenatals? I’m in the early stages of planning to get pregnant but figured I should go ahead and start taking a prenatal vitamin.

  1. Exciting news!! And yes you are right – start supplementing now!

These are what I always recommend. They have everything you need (almost, see below) and no artificial dyes or untested herbal supplements:

    With that I also recommend:
-Additional calcium – usually 2 chews/day depending on your diet (and they usually have vitamin D in them as well, which there isn’t enough of in the prenatal)
-And a fish oil for DHA. Love this brand – no smell/aftertaste:

    Good luck 🙂

    1. So helpful! Thanks, Dr. Jen. Does it matter if I take the vitamin at night? All vitamins make me queasy and that helps.

  2. This is great Stephanie! I had to take the gummies version because everything else would make me sick. Wish I knew about them with my previous pregnancies, but at least I didn’t suffer much in this last one 🙂

  3. You can take them whenever works for you! Just don’t take your vitamin and additional calcium chew/pill together – the calcium inhibits iron absorption from the vitamin.

  4. I had taken prenatals before pregnancy (not even planning on getting pregnant) just because they’re great vitamins for overall women’s health. But when I did get pregnant, I was so sick, and the prenatals didn’t help at all. I started taking just a regular adult gummy vitamin with extra folic acid tablets, and it helped a lot. I also did a lot of reading before picking the prenatals I was taking and the common suggestion was to pick either a liquid-filled capsule or to test any pills to make sure they dissolve fairly quickly in water (you want them to dissolve within like 30 minutes or something like that so they don’t clog up your liver!). Granted, I’m no doctor…just a tip I read about when trying to figure out why they prenatals made me so sick!

Also, if you start taking them now, they might not make you sick with you do get pregnant. Your body will kind of already be used to them. And make sure you eat with them! If you’ve never made the mistake of taking any vitamin without eating, you’re lucky…I don’t recommend it!

    1. Ugh- I have. And they always make me sick! Taking any vitamin at night, before bed and after dinner, is the only way I can stomach them.

  5. I have a very sensitive stomach too and don’t handle vitamins well. For prenatals I took VitaMed MD Plus (it’s a multivitamin and a DHA softgel). They never made me sick!

  6. I have been taking the prenatal vitamins by secrets of tea for about 3 months and I am on the TTC stage. I have not talked to a doctor about them yet (because I am not pregnant yet), but I did a ton of research and these are the ones I picked due to having the right ingredients and the added DHA. I went from never taking vitamins to taking one of these every day and had zero side effects. I have been sensitive before to vitamins but so far, not these. Hopefully, that doesn’t change when I get pregnant. Just ordered my second bottle!
