Recognizing the signs
How do you know when your toddler is ready for potty training?
Tell us who you are! We use your name to make your comments, emails, and notifications more personal.
My little one is starting to copy her older sister… she too tries to climb on and sit on the big kid toilet. 🙂 She’s also starting to say when she’s gone potty, although in her diaper. I think she might be ready…
Sounds like it!
Yes, showing interest is the strongest sign your little is ready for potty training, and she’s recognizing the urge. Yay! You’re close!
I think they show interest when they are ready for it. Some get ready earlier than others. For example, my oldest was potty trained just a little bit after he turned two years old. When my youngest, well, he was almost four years old. Doing #2 in the potty was the hard part for both of them. I tried it all, the potty seats that go over ours, their own potty chairs, and nothing. My youngest was so hard, he was just terrified. I then started offering him treats, even if he couldn’t go I would give him one just for trying and sitting in the potty for a little bit every couple minutes. One day it finally happened. Both him & I were so excited. No more dirty underwear! I eventually winged him off the treats ( I would buy fruit snacks and empty the bags and put them all into one container and would let him pick one piece everytime he would go potty or just for trying).
Now what I worry about is that he is about to begin preschool and even though he is potty trained and ”tries” to wipe himself I still double check and finish wiping for him because he is little and doesn’t always get it all. My oldest had it down by the time he started school so I didn’t worry about him but with him I will have to talk to his teacher to keep an eye on him until he gets it all. :-/
You’ve identified so many things that affect potty training, from showing interest, to gender, to personality traits. It sounds like you successfully navigated through the hard part of potty training. He’ll catch on to this part too. Have you tried using flushable wipes? They are a little softer on the heinie and better at cleaning than straight paper. Keep up the good work, you are doing a great job!
