Things breastfeeding supporters need to STOP doing!

As a huge supporter of breastfeeding, I am always mindful that advocating for breastfeeding can sometimes go too far. Don’t get me wrong – providing truthful, objective education is important but guilt-tripping, shaming, judging are not. Here’s a great post that talks more about how NOT to go about showing your breastfeeding support:

  1. I agree with what you are saying. However, I find this article to be a bit condescending. With every point she makes, I feel as though she continues to shame formula. I think it’s time we stop judging and let women make their own decisions. Everyone knows the facts and we should be able to choose what is best for our family. It shouldn’t be so “hard to swallow” as this author states. She is doing exactly what she says not to do…judging. Very disappointing on her part.

    1. I will have to disagree that everyone knows the facts about breastfeeding – I’ve counseled so many moms who didn’t know about many of the benefits (either for their baby or them, especially big ones like decreased rates of cancer and heart attacks in moms who breastfeed) who were so appreciative to get this info in an objective, nonjudgmental way. And that’s the key – counsel everyone equally so they can make an informed choice either way, without feeling judged or guilted into anything!
