Thinking of having another baby; level with me.

So guys, we’ve got our nice life with a 4 yr old daughter and have been talking about another child for about a year now, but have yet to pull the trigger. Our daughter is finally at the age where we can take her just about anywhere and we don’t have to worry about being gone too long or nap time. Will we start all over with schedules, naps, etc. if we have number two, or does the second child learn to go with the flow of the family?

  1. Speaking as a dad with two kids, I clearly remember my feeling when the topic of a second kid first came up: flat-out panic. Until then, we were a happy unit of three, so why rock the boat? It was literally impossible to imagine adding another kid to the family, and things were just starting to get fun. We could take hiking vacations again. We could go to real restaurants that didn’t serve chicken fingers. We could go to decent non-animated movies and share our real favorite bands with our older son (instead of pretending that Raffi was the best thing ever). But it turns out there was a hole in our family that we didn’t even know existed, and its name was Jake. After he was born, everything totally changed–a lot of the things we had grown attached to ended abruptly. We were once again harried, sleepless, frustrated, and feeling stretched too thin in every way. And I would say that Jake didn’t adapt to the flow of our family as much as he caused our family to flow in a whole new way–he didn’t mold to fit us; we molded to fit him. Now it’s impossible to imagine our family without him, because we’re not a family of three anymore, and maybe we never really were. Maybe we were always a family of four and one of us was just a little late to the party.

  2. I didn’t mean to join the man cave group, but I had to comment on Jon’s answer. Oh my goodness, sweetest thing I’ve read in a long time! And I agree, yes, you’re sleepless, frustrated, etc., but it’s all totally worth it! Ok, I’ll step away from the man cave 🙂

  3. I, like Alexe, didn’t really mean to intrude on the Man Cave group, but I read Jon’s comment yesterday and wanted to comment so badly! You made me tear up! What a beautiful point of view! And now I’ll step away and let the men have their cave back as well!
