Toddler games

So my 20-month-old son has found a new game…hiding! He’ll “ide” behind the shower curtain while I’m using the bathroom. He “ides” in the bathroom closet when my husband takes him in for his bath. And today, he did something pretty hilarious. After a diaper change, he went running out of his room and down the hall pretty quietly (for a toddler). I looked in his usual places while calling out his name the whole time. He wasn’t anywhere. My heart started beating faster, but I knew he was right there somewhere! I decided to check our bathroom because my dog was kind of hinting that he had gone that way. I turned on the light, but I heard nothing…not a giggle, not a breath, not a peep. I finally found him sitting on the floor in the corner of my husband’s closet between a shoe shelf and the laundry basket. He was just sitting and waiting for me to find him in absolute darkness until I turned on the light. When he looked up and caught my eyes, he squealed with glee and had the biggest grin I’ve ever seen! He got me good…I fear we have a prankster on our hands…

    1. My four year old likes to hide and it is funny until I call her name because I need her to do something like clean up her mess and then she continues to hide. At this point I get annoyed or upset and this fun game of hers turns into a time out for not listening. Since your son is only 20 months though I guess you can’t really get to angry at him. If my 2.5 year old did this it would be hard to get upset at her because she thinks it is just a silly game and doesn’t understand how worried we may get.

    2. I can definitely see how this game will be terrifying a little later and under different circumstances.

      1. When my son was about that age we couldn’t find him anywhere. Our oldest and I were looking all through the house, under beds, behind doors, etc., yelling his name over and over, and my husband was looking outside. I was terrified that he’d gotten out the door somehow and had run into the road. Finally I noticed the coat closet door was cracked open and when I looked, there he was, sitting on the vacuum cleaner, quiet as a mouse. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. He’s four now, but he still likes to hide and not answer when I call him, no matter how many times I tell him not to! Oy 😛

  2. My daughter hid outside the other day… on purpose to freak me out and make me think someone nabbed her while I was unloading groceries! Enjoy the adorable hiding while you can. 🙂

  3. We play hide-and-go-seek…..but my 3 yr old tells me where to hide first 🙂 I’ve told him this is cheating but he says, “Mommy, you still hide there.” !!
