Water births & safety – new statement from ACOG

A new statement from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists was just released regarding the safety of water (aka immersion) births. You can find the official statement here:

Here are some highlights:
-Immersion in water during the first stage of labor (that is, not yet pushing or delivering) may be helpful in reducing pain and the usage of pain medications.
-There is no evidence yet that laboring in a tub during the first stage of labor improves outcomes for baby.
-There have been cases of drownings and life-threatening infections in babies delivered in birthing tubs.
-There are no studies that are large enough yet to assess the safety of giving birth in a tub (that is, the second stage of labor).
-Based on these issues, ACOG does not recommend delivering in birthing tubs until we know more about the safety to for both mom and baby. They do say that using immersion in the first stage of labor can help with pain, but routine care and monitoring should not be ignored because a woman is in a tub.
