Why does my baby have days and nights mixed up?

Many parents experience the sheer exhaustion that comes with a newborn baby who has his days and nights mixed up in the first few weeks of life. Rest assured, this is a short-lived period in your infant’s life.

Here are a few tips to get your little one on track:

  • Keep the days bright and the nights dark. Open the windows and let the sun shine in during the day, and keep an environment with low lighting and minimal stimulation at night.
  • During the day, don’t worry about keeping the house quiet while the baby is sleeping. Let the phone ring and the dog bark. Keep those quiet hours for nighttime.
  • Limit your interaction at night: 3 a.m. is not the time to play with and sing to your baby. Let him or her know early on that those nighttime hours are for feeding, changing, and sleeping only.
