When can my child eat fish?

For most children, cooked fish can be introduced around one year of age.

Fish is one of the top eight food allergens, so if you have a close family relative with a fish allergy, speak with your doctor or allergist before including it in your child’s diet. Otherwise, at a year, you can try tuna fish salad, cooked salmon, codfish, or other thoroughly cooked fish. Stay away from raw fish, such as sushi, because young children do not have a fully developed immune system until they are 5-6 years old.

  1. My pediatrician highly recommended that I give my little one salmon. I gave it to her around 11 months for the first time and it was a hit. We eat a lot of fish in our house, so I’m so happy that she can now enjoy it with us. 🙂
