Most insect bites are simply a nuisance, but some insects carry diseases that can make your child sick. For this reason, it is important to use an insect repellent when your child is going to be outdoors for any length of time.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), insect repellents with DEET are the most effective in preventing insect bites. Different products contain varying amounts of DEET, so parents must be careful to read all labels and apply them according to product directions. The AAP recommends that products for children contain no more than 30 percent DEET to keep your child safe.

I use California Baby natural bug repellent. It is Deet free, however, contains lemongrass and citronella to repel insects. It has been very effective for both of my girls (ages 3 & 1). It also makes me feel better knowing that I’m using a product that’s free of harsh chemicals.
Don’t right now
I really don’t like using insect repellent on myself of the girls because of the smell and stickiness of it. I just bought some bracelets that are supposed to repel mosquitos so I am hoping they will work. I haven’t had a chance to use them yet but very eager to see how effective they are.
