What is the best way to clean a small scrape?

Falls and scrapes are just part of growing up, knowing how to care for them is a skill all parents and caregivers should master.

Once your little one is calm, gently rinse the wound with clear, warm water. Use a small amount of soap on a clean wet washcloth to gently wipe the wound. Hydrogen peroxide is not necessary and can cause further tissue damage, so avoid it. Regular soap cleans most wounds just fine. Gently wipe dirt and debris away, and then rinse again with warm water. Apply a small amount of antibacterial ointment (the over the counter brands are fine) and cover with a bandage. Repeat this process twice a day.

There is no need to leave the wound uncovered or to “air out.” Keeping it clean and covered will promote healing and minimize scarring. If your little one is afraid of or sensitive to bandage removal, simply soak it off in the bathtub. Watch for increasing redness, pain, or fever as signs the wound is not healing and requires medical attention.
