7 things to know about gestational diabetes

Elevated blood sugar

In diabetes, excess glucose in your blood can damage small vessels in your body.

In diabetes, when your body’s glucose, or sugar, levels become elevated to the point that your body cannot convert all of the sugar and carbohydrates you are eating into energy, the excess begins to accumulate in your blood. This extra glucose can damage small blood vessels in your kidneys, extremities, and throughout your body, especially in sensitive organs like eyes.
