Week-by-Week Pregnancy (Weeks 1-13)

Week 1-2

When your doctor figures your due date, he or she will work from your last date of menstruation, so technically your pregnancy “begins” about two weeks before your egg was fertilized. See what else is happening during weeks 1-2. © Medical-Artist.com

Even though you may not feel pregnant yet, your body is already going through huge transformations—long before your baby has even began developing.

Pregnancy technically begins at implantation—when your fertilized egg implants into the wall of your uterus—which is usually about five days after fertilization.

However, the first two weeks are included in your overall pregnancy timetable, which is a total of 40 weeks—this includes fertilization. If you’re looking to calculate your due date, add 280 days to the date of when your last period began.

  1. Ok so I have a couple questions, I have pcos and been living with it my whole life. My periods are usally regular and on time every month. I already have one child and she will 5. Its been a while So here is my question. I’m currently 7 days late for my period. Within those 7 days I have had cravings for banna peppers and black olives, I got up 3 days ago feeling sick to my stomach then ran to the bathroom and got sick and continued to feel nauseated all day, I also have been tired alot more then usaual but do not have the sore breast or color changing of my areolas but do have headaches and fatigue and feeling dizzy. I took a test 3 days after I was suppose to start my period and it came out negative. Could I be pregnant?

    Reply
    1. You could be, or it could be that your cycle is off and is a little late. I’d try another test in a few days and if still negative but no period check in with your doc. In the meantime start taking a prenatal vitamin and continue if you are having unprotected sex just in case!

  2. I had sex condom broke but he wasn’t bad close to ejaculating, I took plan b just to be safe. I got my period a week early and it was enough to fill up a couple tampons, then my stomach started gurgling pretty bad. The next month I got my period for 6 days and it filled up tampons. I have taken multiple tests and they are negative. My stomach is still gurgling could I be pregnant?

    1. It doesn’t sound like you are pregnant based on your negative tests and periods, but it may be gas or your intestines. If you are worried, check in with your doctor!

    1. Hi Tammy, It is true you can still get pregnant after having your tubes tied so I would hope at your doctor’s visit they did a urine pregnancy test? If not I’d do that (home tests are just as good as the ones in the doctor’s office). If it is negative (keep in mind tests done too early can be falsely negative, which is why a recheck in a few weeks can help out even further), than you aren’t pregnant and your symptoms are from something else, which your doctor can investigate further.

    Reply
    1. Hi Bre, I’m assuming you mean the depo shot? If so doctor’s offices have protocols to follow when you are late for getting your next shot, and that usually involves testing for pregnancy. I’d call your doctor’s office and explain what’s going on so they can rule that out.

I didn’t feel right about this so I got a clearblue test and took it 20 minutes after the walk in test and it was positive. Saying I was 1-2 weeks pregnant. What should I do? 16. Hi, I have a question that’s been bugging me for the longest. So about A month and a half ago, I had at least 5-10 occasions of unprotected sex with my boyfriend ranging from the beginning of my menstrual cycle to the end. About a week before my period started my breast became very tight with aching on the sides of them. I haven’t missed a period or even been more than a day late since I first started menstruating. For this particular cycle, the day of my period only one drop of pink twinged blood dropped in the toilet while I was using the bathroom and for the next 2 days brown discharge (very,VERY light the size of a finger print) in my pad. Then all of a sudden I get my regular period 5 days later (medium flow). Since then I have had bad lower back pain on the right side on and off. No changes in diet, over exercising, or stress. My next period is due in 5 days. Any ideas?? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jazmine, It’s hard to say but you could have one irregular cycle or a very early miscarriage. I’d see what your next period does, but if it is not completely normal I’d take a home pregnancy test and/or check in with your doctor. If you aren’t wanting to get pregnant, be sure to use good birth control starting ASAP. If you are having unprotected sex your chances of pregnancy are very high so be sure to be taking a prenatal vitamin just in case. Good luck!

    1. Hi Keke, So sorry you are going through this. If you are under 35 and have been trying for 12 months to get pregnant without success, it is time for a fertility work-up. Ovulation is a part of fertility but not the whole thing, so this would mean checking other factors such as thyroid issues, the shape of your uterus, the health of your eggs, the quality of your husband’s sperm (and this is done after 6 months if you are over 35). I’d ask your OB to start with this or refer you to a fertility doctor to look further so you can get some answers. Good luck!

    Reply
    1. Hi MeMe, That shouldn’t be giving you any issues as it can be normal for the uterus (and cervix) to be a little variable in position. But after 12 months of trying to conceive, usually a fertility work-up is recommended. This may include bloodwork, ultrasounds, semen analysis, etc. So I’d start there with your doctor and hopefully you will get some answers. Good luck!

  23. My periods are normally sporadic and unpredictable, I had my thyroid removed 4 years ago due to thyroid cancer and it hasn’t leveled out since. My period had just finished on July 2nd or the day before and my husband released inside me. I’m never sure when I’m ovulating but had recently started using a tracker to better pinpoint my cycle and it said I would most likely be ovulating within 5 days after. Normally I wouldn’t be concerned since my period is almost always a week to 4 months late, but I’ve been having odd symptoms this time, such as nausea, swollen breasts, unusual fatigue (I’m normally tired due to the lack of thyroid, but this is
more than usual.), and cravings for food I don’t normally eat. I’m confused as well because I had to have a CT scan about 2 weeks later and a week before the scan they took a test which came back negative. So I guess what I’m asking is; how soon can blood tests tell, and if it was too early to catch and I am pregnant, will the CT scan have caused harm to the baby?? Please help, I’m kind of freaking out here….

  24. Hello. After having sirens for almost 6 yrs, my better half was adamant on getting me pregnant, so he took my Mirena out himself. Yes, he did it himself. Didn’t hurt, thank goodness. That was June 19th, had sex twice that night, the second again the 22nd twice and 23rd twice. But while on Mirena I never had a period…so my question is, could I be fertile right away? I’m experiencing fatigue, loss of appetite, lower back cramps, bloating, nausea, diarrhea, mood swings. I don’t want to waste money on tests just yet but going out of my mind thinking I am pregnant.

I started feeling very tired and had to pee a lot so I took a pregnancy test may 29th it said yes. It was a first response test. Every single one after was negative. Now my bellys getting bigger, I’m tired, very sore mipples with spots on them, lower back pain, and consitpated. What should I do??? I haven’t tested since like 2 weeks ago.

We happened to be on vacation during this time and had intercourse nearly everyday. I am now experiencing sore nipples, fatigue and I’m getting pms like cramping. The cramping has been happening for the past3 days. Its random not constant I took a test yesterday and it was negative. Is this cramping something that can happen early pregnancy or is this more likely pre menstrual symptoms? Also yesterday I had no appetite, I went out for lunch with a friend and I had to force myself to eat which is not normal for me. I love food lol. TYIA

    1. Hi Jessica, Cramping can happen both as PMS symptoms and early pregnancy symptoms, so it is hard to say why you are feeling them! However I’d take a prenatal vitamin (if you aren’t already and having unprotected sex) and test when you’d be due for your period if it doesn’t come. Good luck!

  30. I had an abdominal myomectomy November 2016 and my periods have been short and light. I stopped taking my pills mid April and I had unprotected sex about 3 weeks ago during the time I was ovulating. I took a MAP the next day and almost 3-4 days later I start having cramps near my belly button and lower left ab, shortness of breath, metallic mouth taste, heartburn, acid reflux symptoms, and craving everything. I took several pregnancy test and all was negative. My cycle started Monday about 2 days early and was a lot heavier than usual for 2.5 days and stopped. I was a little concerned since my post op cycles have been extremely light. I went to get an ultrasound and it showed a tiny cyst by one ovary which my MD said that it shouldn’t be a concern. I’m a few days short of 3 wks since unprotected sex. I wanted to know if I should test again or have other concerns other than pregnancy.

I had sex 3 days in a row starting on the 13th (the first day being the last day of my inactive pill on my bc) and my boyfriend came inside me each time. I was recently put on lamactil for post traumatic stress and klonopin plus I had surgery on the 5th so I was on antibiotics. it Is now almost a week and my breasts are so sore and I see tiny dots on my areolas (Montgomery gland bumps?) I had an ectopic pregnancy back in October and lost a fallopian tube so I know it may be a little harder for me to conceive. I am tired, have backaches tender breasts and headaches. I made a doctors appointment within the 2 week span to see if I’m pregnant. Do you think these are early pregnancy symptoms. And if so I don’t want to keep taking me medications if I am. I hope you can help me?

    Reply
    1. Hi RS, those could be early pregnancy symptoms and you are right – you want to make sure all medications you take are safe in pregnancy. I’m not sure when your last period was but it would be worthwhile calling sooner rather than later to see if you can have a blood pregnancy test to tell. In the meantime I would not go off any medications without talking to the person who prescribed them so you can discuss risk/benefits and if you plan on stopping them, how to do so and what to use instead. Lamictal is safe in pregnancy but klonopin is not, so it is worth discussing if you think you may be pregnant. Good luck!

I believe I was ovulation on that week so we started having sex right away. A few days after I started feeling pregnancy symptoms but started spotting on April 10 which was weird since my last period was on march 16 and I get my period every 28 days. I don’t know if by removing the paragard got my cycle a little wacky. I was supposed to get my period until march 13 or 14. Anyways I started spotting on April 10 and continued spotting only when I wiped until April 14 evening and then got my period for approximately 2-3 days. My normal period lasts about 5 days and I never spot for more than a day. I had multiple home pregnancy tests and all negative. I had one blood pregnancy test on April 14 and was negative too. I didn’t retake since I got my period. However, I’ve been reading a lot of implantation bleeding and I’ve been thinking that maybe I could be pregnant. By the way after getting my period all my pregnancy symptoms went away.

    1. Hi Navi, It sounds like you and your doc have been very thorough about testing both your blood and urine which is great. It doesn’t sound like you were pregnant so I’d just assume your cycle was off from your IUD being removed, and moving forward I’d continue to track like you are. Good luck!

    Reply
    1. Hi Felicia, You can definitely get pregnant and if you are having unprotected sex you are definitely at very high risk for this! If you don’t want to be pregnant from this specific incident I’d recommend using a Plan B method ASAP, and contacting your doctor to discuss birth control right away to prevent these scares in the future!

  40. I recently found out I was pregnant through 2 home tests and through heartbeats doctor office. I am only about 3 weeks. I recently had some bleeding similar to a normal menstrual but nothing serious. So I was sent for a beta HCG blood test yeaterday. My result was a 4.0. However, I was scheduled to go do my 2nd one within 48 hours which would be Saturday at 4. They decided to cancel it because they assume I miscarried since my HCG was under 5. I don’t think I miscarried but being only 3 weeks it’s hard to know and with no 2nd test to see if my levels could have or did increase or lower I feel like they just don’t care. Please give me some hope or advice on if anyone else thinks it is a miscarriage or if I should demand 2nd test etc? Thanks

    1. Hi Amber, there’s nothing wrong with you wanting a second test so that you feel completely confident in the diagnosis. I’d call and express your feelings so you can follow it through. Good luck and so sorry you are struggling.

Ever since I’ve been experiencing back pain, cramping, and I don’t have an appetite to eat or do anything. Home pregnancy test was negative. Could I still be pregnant?

    1. Hi Maria, Anytime you have unprotected sex you can theoretically be pregnant! I’d recommend checking in with your doctor or midwife to be completely sure, as they may want to repeat your test or run bloodwork. Good luck!

  45. Hello, I have a question. So a little over 2 weeks ago I had unprotected sex, in which he ejaculated in me several times in one night. After that I got my period three days later. I would say it was “pretty heavy” and like a full period but not AS heavy as it usually is. Instead of going through maybe 3 super tampons in one day like usual, I went through about 2 my whole period that lasted 3-4 days. I saw that my period came so I then knew for sure I wasn’t pregnant, however, now I am experiencing signs/symptoms I can’t ignore. I am falling asleep earlier then usually. Even on my days off I take 1 or 2 naps, stomach feels really bloated and kind of hard at the bottom near my pelvis, I feel really sluggish, light cramping, and my breast feel rather heavy and tingly. My periods have had a history of being irregular but have been consistent (27-32 day cycle) for the past couple of months which is why I wasn’t too worried about unprotected sex 3 days before my expected period. Am I just imaging things or am I in the clear for a pregnancy test?

    1. Hi Jazmine, Since your cycles are so irregular and your period wasn’t the norm for you, I’d say you definitely need to make sure you aren’t pregnant as you certainly could be. I’d recommend a pregnancy test and a check-in with your doctor so you feel better! You can also talk about birth control at that visit too, since you can certainly get pregnant even with irregular cycles. Good luck!

      1. Whoops – just re-read that to say your cycles had been more regular recently – but I still recommend the other advice 🙂 You just never know, and it’s best to take a test and check!

    1. Hi Adilen, blood pregnancy tests are pretty accurate pretty quickly, so if you tested after implantation would have occurred (usually about a week after ovulation) it should be accurate. See more here: https://www.bundoo.com/articles/types-of-pregnancy-tests/

I’ve had unprotected sex again April 8th and I’m sure my partner has released the second time. What should I do next? I’m confused and nervous!!!! Help please!

    1. Hi Kae, It sounds like you should schedule an appointment to be seen ASAP by your doctor or midwife. They can do a pregnancy test and order a blood pregnancy test if needed. You may just be a few days late with your period, but if you aren’t wanting to be pregnant then you should look into taking emergency contraception (like Plan B or having an IUD placed) right away given that you just had unprotected sex on April 8th. And using a good form of birth control consistently is the key too if you don’t want to be pregnant, and they can go over those options with you at your appointment. If you don’t have a doc, searching for your local Planned Parenthood can be helpful as they often get new patients in very quickly. Good luck!

  48. hi, my last period was Feb 5th, I did pregnancy urine test on March 5th and it was positive, did HCG test on March 6th and it was 58 then did it again on March 11th and it was 819. the doctor asked for ultrasound and had my first one on March 16th, apparently it was too early, so the technician inserted a camera in to make sure baby is in the right spot, then doctor ordered another ultrasound for April 5th.. the technician was so disrespectful and he barely touched my skin and said nothing is showing yet, and I asked to put camera in and I refused, I just felt so uncomfortable. yesterday I had some brown spotting, just once, then I wiped a pinkish color spot after I peed, I had no pain, or cramps, no spotting occurred at night, this morning I had a light red spotting twice, but not continuous and still no pain. I called the hospital cause I got worried, and they said not to unless I started having pain or heavy bleeding. I have an appointment with gyn tomorrow morning, but I am so worried. My youngest is 16 and never used to have such spotting during pregnancy, and I don’t know what to think, am I losing the baby?

    1. Hi Maliha, Congrats on your pregnancy! But I am sorry that it is triggering for you regarding your worries about your gestational hypertension. It is so normal for us moms to worry, but if it becomes too frequent or is making us miss out on the joys of pregnancy it means we need some help. The best things you can do is manage your blood pressure as best you can (which it sounds like you are!) and mention these feelings to your provider. Together you can both work together to figure out what will help you feel more at ease – possibly increased visits, joining a pregnancy group to get support from other moms, mindfulness techniques, etc. Good luck!

  50. I have been experiencing abdominal pain for about 8 days. I saw a general physician about them on Monday where I had blood work that came back great. I also had an abdominal ultrasound that showed no gallstones. I had assumed it may be constipation and related to my vitamins but despite not taking them since Thursday evening I am still having pain. It is right in the centre below my sternum…. right at my stomach. It’s becoming very frustrating and I can’t get much done at all. I have 3 other children and have been missing work as a result of discomfort. I’m scared to eat because it makes it worse and I’m definitely not drinking enough because I feel so full and sore. I went for an hour walk today and have been drinking warm lemon water and using warm magic bag compresses. Any tips or advice… should I go to an emergency and request an obstetrician? I am 7 weeks.

    1. Hi Shannon, if you are in enough pain and are worried going to an urgent care or ED is certainly OK (or call who is on call for your doctor as they should have someone answering calls/urgent pages 24/7). I don’t know what bloodwork exactly they had done to check on pregnancy, but I would ask and check. Not quite sure if it is an OB/GYN issue but your doctor should be able to determine if you need to see one based on what you’ve had done, your exam, and how you look in person. Good luck!

    1. Hi Bre, It’d be pretty hard to get pregnant the day after your period, but we are always taught to never say never! Since I don’t know the details about your cycles we can’t ever rule anything out – if you are worried, check with your doctor!

  52. The last time I had a period was March 6 but I started on February 28. I feel like my period is late or just off. It always came between the 26th and 28th of the month. Could I just be paranoid or did I have a period for March already cause of the way the way the date fell.

    1. Hi Carolyn, I’m a little confused – was the first date of your last period Feb 28th and ended on Match 6th? You wouldn’t have had a period on Feb28th and then again on March 6th – if your Feb 28th period was normal, then stopped, then you had some spotting again on March 6th that wouldn’t be a true period – maybe some intermenstrual spotting. I’d check in with your doctor if you are worried so you can give him or her some good details about what your cycles are like, what this was like, and if they need to do an exam and/or pregnancy test!

They have a wealth of great (accurate) resources. And yes at how far along you are a medication abortion should still be an option too. Good luck!

At 8 weeks the baby is the size of an apple seed.
Its not your decision to push keeping a baby .

This is coming from someone who has had both pregnancy & prior to that 2 abortion for two DRASTICALLY different reasons – both causing regret and grief, but i healed. As do many women. And if you don’t feel guilt or sad for long, or at all, thats okay too. It just shows how confident you are with your decision and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I find it intellectually and morally dishonest when the pro choice crowd are hypocritical that they only valid choice is abortion, and when someone speaks out against it, they are disparaged and told to shut up. The pro choice crowd: anti choice, anti science.

    2. It depends Michelle on what number baby it is for you (first time moms tend to feel movement later as they aren’t always sure what they are looking for), where your placenta is, and also sometimes your weight. Having a placenta in the front (anterior) and being overweight can make it harder to feel your little one. Most women feel movement by 20 weeks, with many feeling it a few weeks sooner than that. At first many moms describe it as feeling like bubbles popping or butterflies.
