Baby development: Your 9 month old

Baby stress

A parent with high stress levels (or toxic stress) can affect his or her baby in a negative way.

A little bit of stress is a good thing for a baby — the challenges of learning to walk and talk should cause some degree of positive stress that propels your baby’s development onward. However, if a baby’s environment becomes too stressful, it can alter a baby’s brain development. To avoid this kind of toxic stress, parents need to remember to take care of themselves, too, instead of focusing completely on their baby.
